Obstacle Course Review: Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run

Anthony, Sherri, me, Cheryl post-race

Of the last four years this race has been around, I have done it three times skipping only last year. For myself this is a very easy run in terms of testing my progress but it is wonderful for first-timers and others who are still trying to get comfortable with it. This was Anthony’s second race, and both Sherri and Cheryl’s first race. They are both believers now and will be planning to do more in 2014.

Graded Assessment on Specific Aspects of Race (Scale of 1 to 5)
Area Assessment Score
Obstacles Not overly challenging, but this is not a Tough Mudder or Spartan event. What did you have climb over or crawl under definitely tested your agility and flexibility. Wading through the ocean up to your waist was a nice feature as it felt refreshing. 3
Choke Points None! This is a first that I can recall. The amount they sent out in waves were small enough to prevent this even as we went during the last major heat of the day. 5
Logistics Another top-notch area. No hassles parking or getting our badges or cleaning up afterward. 5
Extra Fees None for parking or bag checks. You could pay for VIP parking (i.e really close to the entrance), but it was optional. 5
Ease of Access Kind of a pain to get to since I am not familiar at all with the upper Bronx. But it was next to City Island, which is a great reference point. 4
Overall Repeatablity Will certainly do again next year with the same group to test my overall speed. It was a fun, casual afternoon. 4
